Interstate 30 will close completely through downtown Dallas this weekend as construction crews resume bridge demolition work postponed by last week’s ice storm.

All main lanes will shut down in both directions from Interstate 45/U.S. 75 to Interstate 30 starting Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 p.m. and reopening Monday, Feb. 2 at 5 a.m.

The closure marks the second major weekend shutdown for the I-30 Canyon Project, an $888 million reconstruction effort expected to last until late 2030. The Texas Department of Transportation postponed this round of closures by one week due to the ice storm that hit North Texas.

For Preston Hollow and North Dallas residents who commute downtown or travel through the central business district, the closure creates another obstacle during an already challenging construction period. The project aims to modernize the aging downtown corridor and reconfigure the freeway to handle future traffic demand.

Construction crews completed their work ahead of schedule during the first major closure two weekends ago, reopening I-30 by the 5 a.m. Monday deadline without delays. TxDOT has not released a full schedule of future weekend closures, though more are expected throughout the multi-year project.

Weather remains a variable that could force additional rescheduling, as demonstrated by this month’s postponement.

Beyond the weekend shutdowns, several downtown streets face long-term closures that will affect access patterns for years:

Cesar Chavez Boulevard closed at I-30 beginning Monday, January 12 at 9 p.m. and will remain closed through late 2028.

Akard Street closed at I-30 starting Tuesday, January 13 at 9 p.m., with the closure lasting through summer 2028.

Cadiz Street will close at I-30 starting Tuesday, January 13 at 9 p.m. The street will eventually reopen on a new alignment later in the project.

Good Latimer Expressway will narrow to one lane in each direction starting Tuesday, January 13 at 9 p.m., with restrictions lasting through early 2028.

The Canyon Project represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in downtown Dallas, targeting safety improvements and capacity increases along the crucial east-west corridor that connects North Dallas communities to downtown and points south.

Drivers should plan alternate routes this weekend and expect ongoing disruptions as the project progresses through its initial phases.
